VICTORIAN Whitby jet brooch with cameo, hand carved in about 1870
Price: $398.00
DescriptionVICTORIAN Whitby jet brooch with a cameo of a lady, beautifully carved by hand circa 1870, and 2" from top to bottom. During that time jet was carved by jet craftsmen using hand tools in small workshops in Whitby, England. I have tried carving jet myself, and it is very difficult.
Jet was worn for mourning, but Queen Victorian made it so popular that was also worn for it's beauty alone, and it's popularity lasted for decades. This is a fine example from the collection of the Muller mother and daughter, who wrote two wonderful books about jet jewelry.
All items in excellent vintage condition unless otherwise noted.
