Basket Motif Jewelry

BASKETS
have been a favorite motif in jewelry for years. Fashioned
in all styles using many different materials, these are a real delight
to wear. One style popular in the Victorian era was called the
"giardinetti", or little garden. These basket bouquets were small and
detailed and were often made of pastes set in silver or gilt silver.
Marcasites are another stone used alone or combined with pastes. By the
20th century, glass and rhinestones were used, sometimes in enameled
settings. Some were even made in Goofus glass and reverse painted, and in
Lucite which was reverse carved and painted. My own personal favorites
are the baskets made by Ralph DeRosa circa 1940 (see below). They are
multi-layered and use both wonderful stones and enameling to create
intricate beauties.

DUTCH basket motif set with a pendant necklace and brooch with a silver
basket design on a blue background on each. It is stamped with the Dutch sword
hallmark. The pendant is 1-1/2" by 1" and the chain 16". The brooch is 1-3/4" by
7/8". Both have wonderful workmanship with tiny beaded edges and beautiful
filigree work, all in excellent condition.

VICTORIAN antique basket brooch in sterling silver with rose and
yellow gold overlay The basket is spilling over with flowers and leaves
and the brooch has a lovely dental edge. It is hallmarked on the
back side for Birmingham date 1885, sterling silver and a maker’s mark
"WCM" for William Clark Manton, size 1-3/4" by 1-1/4". It
weighs about .27 ounces.

DEROSA basket fur clip with a pastel blue unfoiled rhinestone basket and enameled forget-me-nots, green
