Chatelaine & Aide Memoir

VICTORIAN ladies and
chatelaine their
purses. View

VICTORIAN lady wearing a chatelaine chain.

LADY wearing gold earrings and a
fancy watch and chain.

For years, ladies wore necessary and useful implements
clasped to the waist of their dresses because clothing was not made with
pockets for carrying such items. They were usually worn suspended from a
clip or large brooch with chains and hooks to hold the various implements,
although later dance chatelaines could be worn on a finger ring. Fashioned of both
precious and non-precious metals, they could be extremely simple or
ornamented with embossed work, pierced work and gem stones. They were
fashioned in a wide variety of materials: gold, sterling, gold wash, cut
steel and enameled and jeweled.

Chatelaines might be comprised of items all used for one task…sewing for
instance… or combined with various items that suited the wearer. Some were
matching sets like the cut steel chatelaines and others were compiled over
time by the owner, especially the sterling chatelaines. Belt chatelaines or
waist hooks were also used to hold a purse, as seen in the vintage
photograph above. Most fashionable from the early 1800s to World War I,
they remain popular with antique collectors today.

CHATELAINE
silver chatelaine combining both sterling and silver
plate accessories. The top is embossed with a scrolls and flowers motif and
it is 3-1/2" by 1-3/4" pin back rather than a clip; the round box embossed
with a scene of people in a Medeival courtyard is marked "Spencer & Fumpmans"
and it is 1-1/3" by 1’3" deep, and it spins around a little bit, opening a
small opening in one side. It’s use is a mystery to me! The next accessory
is a stamp box embossed with a butterfly, flowers, and a pebbled design,
marked inside "0214" and it opens to insert the stamps, 1-1/3" by 1" and
5/6" deep. Next is a container with a raise elk head with "L.O.O.M’ under it
and marked "Nov 22,1910" inside. The designs on it are oak leaves and acorns
on one side and an open cartouche on the other side surrounded by acanthas
leaves. The pencil is embossed with scrolls all over, a lead still inside,
and it is 3-/3" long and 1/4" wide. Last is a sterling needle case embossed
with scrolls and cross-hatching on one side and marked with a hallmark and
"sterling,464M" as well as a ribbon-like design on the back, 3-3/4" by 3/4"
and about 1/4". All of these pieces test as sterling.

VICTORIAN 19th century flask as
adornment, a Japanese pendant bottle with applied 10k gold figures on engraved
copper ground suspended on a later gold chain. The motif is a man riding a
dragon one side and a man riding a horse on reverse, 1-1/2" flask on 22" 14k yellow
gold chain. This may be Shakudo, a metal alloy of copper and gold, and this type
of work was done by Japanese sword makers for centuries. The metal lid unscrews.

VICTORIAN
sterling silver forest and hunt chatelaine with maker’s mark
"SC", Birmingham on the second section under the deer. The date letter is hard to read,
perhaps an "m" for the year 1901. The design has a
stag chased by a dog with two angels, one trumpeting, and a fox, as well as
squirrels chasing through the branches. There are two deer in the
middle section too, and surrounding those are branches, leaves and vines. The chains
have alternating links with birds and leaves, and each has a hook for an implement at
the end. The entire length is 9-1/3" and the top portion is 2-5/8" wide.
Another chatelaine by this maker can be seen in the wonderful book
"Chatelaines" by Geneveive Cummins & Nerylla D. Taunton on page 204-6. They
believe the "SC" maker’s mark may be for Stuart Clifford, and if you look
closely, the center plaque on that chatelaine matches the one on ours.

memoir necessaire with it’s own pencil and in the lovely original box marked
"Carassale Hermanos, Montevideo-Paris", notebook 4" by 2-5/8", box 5-1/3" by
4" by 1-1/2". The sterling etched design on the front is tacked with minute
nails, 2 of which are missing, and the initials "HIM" are on the shield. The
inside of the box is shirred with aqua fabric, as is the inside packets of
the book, circa 1880s. The cover is celluloid and the little pencil is bone. This is all in excellent condition with no flaws to
note at all, amazing for a piece over 120 years old. The page inside has a
bit of old fashioned calligraphy including the date 1888.

VICTORIAN cut steel sewing
chatelaine with 7 implements, 16-1/2" total length. The implements include a
key, scissors with case, tiny corkscrew, aide memoire, sewing awl and round
pin holder. This is in as nearly perfect condition as I have ever seen for
it’s kind and age, early Victorian circa 1850.
For years, ladies wore necessary and useful implements clasped to the waist
of their dresses because clothing was not made with pockets for carrying
such items. They were usually worn suspended from a clip or large brooch
with chains and hooks to hold the various implements, although later
chatelaines could be worn on a finger ring. Fashioned of both precious and
non-precious metals, they could be extremely simple or ornamented with
embossed work, pierced work and gem stones. They were fashioned in a wide
variety of materials: gold, sterling, gold wash, cut steel and enameled and
jeweled.
A similar cut steel chatelaine can be seen in "Jewels & Jewelry" by
Clare Phillips on page 65and in "Chatelaine" by Cummins & Taunton, page
198-9.
