HOBE JEWELRY
~ In American from 1927
to 1992 ~
Hobe et Cie was founded in Paris in 1887 by Jacques Hobe. His concept was
to use fine jewelry techniques and non-precious materials to create
jewelry for the middle class as well as for the wealthy. Brought to America in 1915 by his son William, Hobe jewelry was
popular not only with everyday customers, but also with the Hollywood stars
and such luminaries as Flo Ziegfield. Inspired by period jewelry of
the past, Hobe jewelry often had an historic flavor.
The name HOBE is synonymous with quality, especially in their earlier
pieces. Although they made buckles and accessories in the late 1800s,
their costume jewelry pieces from the 1930-50’s years are my personal
favorites. Their gold plated sterling silver wire-work filigree designs
and fabulous stones, sometimes semi-precious or synthetic stones, create a unique old-world style. When they combine
figural objects into their jewelry, such as in the elephant brooch below, they
take creativity to a new high. The purse frames, done in conjunction with
Josef, makers of fine purses, are works of art.

HOBE and their wonderful hand wrought gilt wire work and rhinestone
jewelry from 1940-1950 are some of my very favorites. Some pieces of the
Hobe jewelry from this era are set with semi-precious stones and some
with brilliant rhinestones, both sometimes unfoiled. The hand fashioned
wire work is masterful, adding to the appeal of this jewelry.

HOBE rare and spectacular bracelet made of rose red glass cabochons, all
with a starburst center, and unfoiled clear rhinestones in a gold plated
silver setting. It is 7" wearable length and 1-1/4" widest at the front,
with the braided chain back about 1" wide. This was hand made in the later
1940s with lots of filigree wire work and it is not signed, though an
obvious Hobe piece. Each rosy red cabochon has a star shape on the back that
shows through to the front, a very special look. The three hinged panels
make up the front for a comfortable fit and the clasp is large, secure and
easy to manage. There is one small place where the mesh on the back may
have been repaired, difficult to see unless it is pointed out, and it could
be from when it was originally made. The wonderful color and intricate
handmade wire filigree work adds to it’s beauty, and it still has it’s
safety chain. This is a very special piece, the best of Hobe jewelry.
