MINERVA
LEVER quadruple NEEDLE CASE, an unusual 4-level pop-up sewing needle case or casket made of brass,
circa 1869. There are four buttons that make the four different levered
layers of needles pop up, one at a time. It is marked "Quadruple Minerva Lever Casket,
patented, Copestake, Moore, Crampton & Co., London" and the mechanical
patent number for this is stated as #3517 in one place and #2998 in
another. It is decorated with an embossed head
and helmet of Minerva, goddess of war, knowledge and trade, on both front and back. It is 1-1/4" by 2-3/4" in
size and it functions stiffly but well. You can see a similar version in
Taunton’s book "Antique Needlework Tools" on page 165. Inside the case
are some antique needles, amazingly still there. At this web site you
can see a bit more information about this case:
http://www.coulthart.com/avery/needlecase-pages/quad-minerva.html
It a great sewing collectable and an unusual one.
