Wonderful and unusual vintage
costume jewelry sets,
both signed and unsigned
Many who are interested in
vintage jewelry enjoy assembling sets (also called parures) of things they love, and even more
so when finding pieces they never knew existed. One of the many things I
love about my job is that there are so many new pieces to see and learn about almost every single day!

Some of the sets below took years to assemble, and learning along the
way made it such an adventure. Miriam Haskell sets designed by Frank
Hess, for instance, often include the original hand painted advertising
art work illustrating them, and they can be even more scarce than the
jewelry itself. Victorian sets sometimes come in the charming turtle-shaped
boxes from that era, a lovely way to display those antique pieces. And original
illustrations of De Rosa jewelry have allowed me to identify some of the
unusual and unsigned DeRosa creations. Vintage catalogues are a real delight, and
many of them are 500-700 pages long with illustrations of jewelry from
long ago.

POT METAL necklace and earrings set with lovely rainbow-like
colors of rhinestones, baguettes and pressed glass flowers, circa 1930. The colors include baguettes of
red, rose, purple, topaz, blue and green and the glass florets are red,
blue, purple and black. The necklace is 17-1/2" by 1/3" with a front element
that is 1-1/4" by 1-1/8". The drop earrings for pierced ears are 3" from the hook top to the
earring bottom. While some of the tiny clear rhinestones are graying a bit,
the overall look is brilliant, as is the pot metal setting. In all the years
I have been handling vintage jewelry, this is the first set of it’s kind I
have ever seen! View

PEACOCK EYE Arts & Crafts parure set in textured silver metal with
colorful glass peacock eye cabochons and earrings with clip backs. It is
not often you find an entire matching group like this one. Peacock eyes are
made of crystal or glass over a silver foil, and according to Ginger Moro,
some were made in Gablonz, Bohemia (Germany). The necklace is 17-1/2" and
each leaf is 1-3/4"; the bracelet is 7" by 1"; the smaller earrings are 1"
long, and the dangling clip back earrings are 2-5/8" from top to bottom. It
has the older tube style closure on the necklace and it is all in excellent
condition except for one small chip in the side of a stone on the smaller
earrings, visible only under close examination. This is from the Amsterdam
School of design, or Dutch Art Deco. A very kind lady from Holland let me
know that this is from the 1950s.

piece has raised flowers, berries and scrolls, and none are signed. The bracelet
is 7-1/2" wearable length by 1/2" wide, the brooch is 1" by 3/4" and the pendant
is 1" by 3/4" on an 18"chain.

NECKLACE of rose and blue colored rhinestones, both Dragon’s breath-like
cabochons and blue rhinestones make up spectacular and unusual bib necklace.
This is truly one of the most beautiful necklaces I have owned in my 30
years in the vintage jewelry business. I thought it might be by Schreiner,
but so far I can find no definite proof of that. Whoever made it, it is
wonderful in every way. The rarely seen rose
cabochons have a dimpled look with a rainbow effect in them, the blue
rhinestones are teardrop shaped and they are the perfect accent to bring out the
beauty of this combination. The wearable length is 15" to 17" and the
front drop is 4" long. Probably made in the early 1960s, it is rare and a real
treat to wear. Please look at all of the photos to see the full effect!

BAS
STERLING German rococo style set with pendant, pin, ring
and bracelet. "BAS" is ""Blachian Antik Schmuck" of Munich,
Germany. It translates ""Blachian Antique Jewelry" in English, and I
believe this set is circa 1950. It is marked on the backs
"BAS 925". There is a 17" necklace with 2-1/2" pendant, 7" x 1-1/4" bracelet, 2" pin and ring size 7-3/4
and 1" along the finger. Every piece is in excellent condition in this
wonderful parure.

GUM DROP necklace and brooch set
with glass red, blue and green balls and gold tone leaves in a necklace and
brooch set, circa 1940, necklace 16" length and 1-1/2" front drop, brooch
3-1/2". While this has some elements of an early Hess Haskell, I cannot prove it
with either an ad or art work, so I am not making that attribution. I am selling
it as a just lovely set circa 1940s and while delicate, it is in excellent
condition. A Miriam Haskell Larry Austin advertisement for a similar set
can be seen in Deanna Cera’s book, "Costume Jewellery" 1997 edition on page 10.

starburst parure set in gold tone. It consists of a
necklace that convert to a brooch, a hinged bangle bracelet and earrings all
in the
original fitted box. The necklace is 16" long, the removable brooch is 2" by
1-5/8", the bracelet is 7" around the inside, and the screw back earrings
are 1-1/8" by 3/4". The box is 8" by 5-1/2" by 1-1/3" deep. This set looks
like it was never worn, and came to me in this excellent condition, circa
1950.
