One of the most exciting reference sources
for attributing and dating vintage jewelry are the advertisements in vintage magazines from
years past. These wonderful old advertisements illustrate how vintage costume jewelry was worn, when it
was made, and how it coordinated with the styles of the time. We have also
found ads that tell us who made some of the unsigned pieces we all love. You
can click on each photograph for a larger view.

Many of these ads were shared courtesy of Julie Scarlett, who
sold vintage ads under the seller name papercharm on
ebay. An added thanks to Pat Seal, who was the source of the dates for many
of them.

Bobye Syverson says, "The 20% added charge was a federal tax,
created to pay for WW2. It was called a luxury tax and was charged for
things that were not ‘necessities’, such as jewelry! The law was set up to
be in effect for "the duration plus 6", which meant until the end of the
war, plus six months."
