Art Deco and Deco style Jewelry

ART DECO
is the decorative,
architectural and jewelry style from about 1925 to about 1940. The word
"Deco" comes from a Paris exhibition called the "Exposition
International des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes" which
was held in 1925.
Characteristic features are
stylized forms, geometric designs, chevrons, zigzags and stepped
designs. A good architectural example is the Chrysler Building in New
York City. Deco is both an era and a style, so pieces made later in the 20th
century may be Deco inspired as well. It conveys a sense of energy and
that may be one reason that it is still popular today.

ILJA DE BRUIN
, Netherlands, Art Deco style black onyx pendant
with marcasites and a carnelian. The chain is marked "sterling" on the
clasp, and the necklace is from the 1990s. The hallmark is the
Neatherland key and "835" for 835/1000 sterling, and the maker’s mark
reads "JdB" for Ilja de Bruin, master designer in Amsterdam from 1993
until her death a few years ago as of 2016. De Bruin is the sister of J.
A. Cohen, another wonderful jeweler who made this jewelry in this style
in the 1990’s. The pendant portion is 2" by 3/4" wide and the chain is
20" and it is all in excellent condition. This is a real treasure in
every way, with wonderful design and quality.

Elizabeth Taylor Auction in December 2011,

HERE
. Mr. Cohen lived in Amsterdam, but has since passed away. He
was born in 1941 and died in 1993. According to Ginger Moro’s wonderful
book, "European Designer Jewelry" on page 233, Cohen found vintage molded
glass elements in Paris and combined them with modern silver, onyx,
marcasites and chrysoprase to fashion his Deco inspired jewelry. According
to Cohen, he was also inspired by the Amsterdam School designs from earlier
in the 20th Century. This is one of the best sets I have had in the entire
twenty years I have been in business!
