JACKIE WEEKS ~ "MOE" BAKELITE
I do not know much about this maker, and wish I
did, so if you do please email me! As far as I know, she worked in
bakelite in the
later 1990s, and for a fairly short time. She seems to have done some
work in reverse carving and painting, as well as a few amazing and
wonderful brooches
like those shown below.

PANTTI BAKELITE
Bruce and Vickie Pantti are artisans who originally used
vintage 1930-40s bakelite to make their jewelry. The polish they get on their
pieces is exceptional and
my favorites are their large chunky bangles from the 1990s-early 2000’s.
In the past few years, I hear they have also made jewelry from a resin
material, which would have a different value than their vintage bakelite
pieces. Below are some examples of their earlier bakelite work.

KRONIMUS BAKELITE
Karen and Howard Kronimus are a father and daughter team that
have been making jewelry out of vintage bakelite for years. Karen signs her
art with "KK" and Howard signs his with HK, and sometimes Howard
also puts
his signature "slice of bakelite" in a bangle that is a totally
different color. If he does a red, white & blue bangle, for
instance, he will put a
slice of orange, green, or whatever. It distinguishes his work from all
others. Karen and Howard live in New York in the summers in Florida.

LAINS BAKELITE
Dan and Penny Lains have revisited the family business in working
with plastics. LAMACO,
The Lains’ Manufacturing Company which belonged to Dan’s father, was started in 1939.
It distributed Catalin and Lucite stock until January 1942 and the start of WWII. At
that time Dan’s dad joined the Marines and the remaining Catalin stock was placed in storage.
When he got back from his military service in about 1948, he made some
lovely reverse carved Lucite pieces.
Later, Dan Lains found all his materials in storage and thus began an
interest in reviving the jewelry making. That was in the late 1990s I am
told, and they no longer make jewelry now. The Lains’
goal was to create new designs and approaches to working with
that material, and were determined that they would be entirely
different from any vintage bakelite. They were committed to identifying
their collections in a manner that does not allow for any confusion with
the wonderful work done in the 1930’s to 1950’s. Lain jewelry items were
signed, numbered and released in limited editions, and each bangle took
from one to four days to make. They are high quality, geometrically
designed and reviewed for any faults before being sold.

JUDY CLARKE BAKELITE
Judy Clarke is an artist who works mainly with apple juice
bakelite and Lucite. Her original designs are absolutely fabulous. Her
original works of art are both fun and beautiful. Her work is the most
detailed that I have ever seen and rivals the masters of the old
bakelite reverse carved pieces. Judy spends hours and hours carving and
painting her one-of-a-kind treasures.

wonderful little scenes of an under sea world.
