DEROSA JEWELRY
1934 to 1955 New York City
Let me begin by saying that I am a big fan of DeRosa jewelry. It’s been one of my top favorites for almost 30 years, so
let me know if you have any for sale. I will always pay really fair
prices for pieces that I like, and I like a lot of their pieces!
Ralph DeRosa Company jewelry is known for its intricate and layered designs,
high quality, unusual stones and lovely translucent enameling. Mr. DeRosa’s wife was Virginia and she and their two
daughters, Teresa and Vera (Elvira), also participated in the company. Some of their
jewelry lines were designed by Elvira, but I do not know who
designed the rest.
According to two different
articles in Women’s Wear Daily, one an obituary for Virginia DeRosa, the
DeRosa company was out of business sometime before Spring of 1955. According
to his obituary, Ralph died in August of 1942, and Virginia died in May
of 1966.
DeRosa
jewelry designs include floral, figural, and retro motifs, as well as
designs inspired by some precious jewelry of past eras.
DeRosa jewelry is not always easy to find because not many of each design were
originally made, but is certainly more than worth the search. After years of
collecting and selling this wonderful brand, I have found that the
majority of their pieces were signed, so beware unsigned attributions
unless there is very good reference material to substantiate them. This firm was
at 404 Fourth Street in New York City and created jewelry from the
mid-1930s until the mid-1950s.
As a serious collector, as well as a dealer, one of the best things
about this company is the rarity because not many of their pieces were
made. Many of the pieces shown below are the only ones I have seen in
all the years I’ve been handling vintage jewelry. One exception is the
cupid riding on a pearlized cloud brooch, which I see very often. An
photo of it is shown in this
feature. For me, that and their brooches using tumbled stones are much less interesting than the other DeRosa
pieces, and my guess is that they were made later on.
Hand painted design illustrations from the De Rosa Jewelry
Company seem to have been the first step in the design process. These
miniature works of art are from a collection of over 200 illustrations
that I am happy to own and use as a reference. Several are dated in the
1940’s, and some have hand written notes about how each piece should be
produced. Many jewelry designers never
worked on paper first, but for those who did, these illustrations are
illuminating as to the thought process and
design sense that went into creating this amazing jewelry.
Vintage costume jewelry like DeRosa holds not only beauty, but stories
of an era’s artistry and culture.

DEROSA magnificent peacock and flower basket fur clip marked "R DeRosa"
on the back.
An enameled peacock and a purple unfoiled trapezium shaped rhinestone basket
of flowers and leaves is enhanced by glass pearls and clear
rhinestones. It was made in the early 1940s and it is 3" wide. The
green and red enameling on the bird is beautifully translucent
and colorful and the basket is an unfoiled purple rhinestone of an unusual shape. This is
the very same piece that I loaned to Christie Romero for her wonderful book "Warman’s Jewelry", 3rd Ed,
and it is seen on page 196.

Made in the 1940s, it is 2-1/2" by 1-3/4". Included are red, green and
clear rhinestones. One rhinestone on the left has a minute chip

clip is
accented with glass pearls and clear rhinestones. The leaves and buds
are of green and brown enamel work and they are really lovely. It is signed "R

It is signed "DeRosa" on the back. The gold tone finish on the bottom of the

interest to this charming clip. This is in good vintage condition other than some grayed rhinestones

flowers and green leaves spilling out of it. These are set on a clear rhinestone

not find it distracting. Also

DEROSA PEACOCK
The intricate detail and luminous translucent green
enameling make this one of my favorite of the DeRosa groups. It never
ceases to amaze me how much skill and care it must have taken to design and
create these beautiful pieces of jewelry. Suspended from the mouth of the
birds is a glass pearl that moves as the jewelry does, a nice extra touch.
These were made in 1941 to 1942 according to Women’s Wear Daily and other
advertisements, and in one of them they are called "Kingfishers" rather than
peacocks. That would be
CHINESE Kingfishers,
though,
a bird which I had not seen
before. And yet another ad called them "ducks". They still look more
like peacocks to me with their showy tails and beautiful coloring!
An August 1941 edition of Women’s Wear Daily says that this group is
"among Mr. DeRosa’s most novel designs" and that it was "suggested by the
Chinese Exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum".

In a 1941 edition of Woman’s Wear Daily these were described as

DEROSA HISTORY ~
Raffaele DeRosa married Virginia Naclerio July 10, 1910. She was
barely 16 years old and Ralph was 10 years older. Theresa (their eldest
daughter) was born in 1912 and Elvira in 1914. In 1920, at the age of 35,
Ralph was a foreman at a jewelry factory (don’t know which one yet). When
Ralph died in 1942, his net worth was just shy of $50,000 which was divided
equally between his wife and two daughters. His obituary in the NY Times
stated he was a jewelry designer for 36 years and the President of "Ralph De
Rosa, Inc. for the last 10 years".
Virginia’s 1966 obituary states that the company closed in 1955
(which is contrary to RCJ/CJCI/Brunialti info). It was also confirmed in a
letter written by Clifford Furst of Castlecliff Jewelry to the editor of Women’s Wear Daily
which stated that the company was already closed in June of 1955.
According to Elvira’s wedding announcement in 1951, she had graduated with a
Bachelor of Science from the College of New Rochelle. She also attended New
York University and Columbia University. Elvira died in 1980 in Florida at
the age of 67.

DEROSA FLOWERS
The fantasy and marvelous creativity of
these designs make the DeRosa flower jewelry a joy to own and wear. I
really admire the multiple layers
that give them so much dimension and the enamel work that is rich and often translucent
as well. DeRosa often uses unusual stones in different shapes and
sometimes in unusual materials like the peach colored ceramic flower in the
clip right below here.

Jewelry companies did copy jewelry designs from one another, so if that is the case
here, did Deja copy DeRosa or vice versa? It would be interesting to
know. And to complicate things, Coro did a similar piece as well, and
their piece was patented.
