DEROSA JEWELRY
1934 to 1955 ~ New York City

Let me begin by saying that I am a big fan of DeRosa jewelry. It’s been one of my top favorites for almost 30 years, so
let me know if you have any for sale. I will always pay really fair
prices for pieces that I like, and I like a lot of their pieces!

Ralph DeRosa Company jewelry is known for its intricate and layered designs,
high quality, unusual stones and lovely translucent enameling. Some of their
jewelry lines were designed by Elvira but I do not yet know who designed the
rest. Mr. DeRosa’s wife was Virginia and she and their two
daughters, Teresa and Vera (Elvira), also participated in the company.

According to two different
articles in Women’s Wear Daily, one an obituary for Virginia DeRosa, the
DeRosa company was out of business sometime before Spring of 1955. According
to his obituary, Ralph died in August of 1942, and Virginia died in May
of 1966.

DeRosa
jewelry designs include floral, figural, and retro motifs, as well as designs inspired by
some of the precious jewelry of past eras.

DeRosa jewelry is not easy to find because not many of each design were
made, but is certainly more than worth the search. After years of
collecting and selling this wonderful brand, I have found that the
majority of their pieces were signed, so beware unsigned attributions
unless there is very good reference material to substantiate it. This firm was
at 404 Fourth Street in New York City and created jewelry from the
mid-1930s until the mid-1950s.

As a serious collector, one of the best things about this company is the
rarity because not many of their pieces were made. Many of the pieces shown below are the
only ones I have seen in all the years I’ve been handling
vintage jewelry. One exception is the cupid riding on a pearlized cloud
brooch, which I see very often. An example of it is shown in this
feature. For me, that and their brooches using tumbled stones are much less interesting than the other DeRosa
pieces, and my guess is that they were made later.

Hand painted design illustrations from the De Rosa Jewelry Company
seem to have been the first step in the design process. These miniature
works of art are from a collection of over 200 illustrations
that I am happy to own and use as a reference. Several are dated in the
1940’s, and many have hand written notes about how each piece should be
produced. Many jewelry designers never
worked on paper first, but for those who did, these illustrations are
illuminating as to the thought process and
design sense that went into creating this amazing jewelry.

DEROSA
bird fur clip shown here at the right. #d20435

DEROSA
bird fur clip with outstretched wings paved with blue glass beads that are
lined with clear rhinestones on the chest, wing edges and on a beautifully designed swirling tail.
Made in the 1940s, it is all set in gold plated silver,
and it is 4" across. This is not signed but I attribute it to DeRosa based on
their original design art work which is shown here. Not many DeRosa pieces were
unsigned, but I do find them now and again.

This

DEROSA
original design art work hand painted on tissue shows a fly fur clip that seems to detach from the
larger leaf brooch on which it rests. It looks like the fly #d37735, shown here at the right, but
so far I haven’t seen the leaf brooch to go with it. I sure wish I could
find one!

shown in the design art work at the left. I would be so happy if I could find
the leaf portion shown in that ad, too! The fly
can be seen in the Brunalti book "American Jewelry" on page 266.
It was also advertised in Women’s Wear Daily, March 1943, where it
states that it came in two different sizes as well as with matching
earrings.

This

DEROSA
clip is such fun! The ad says
"The Bee – intricate design in green or rose plated sterling with
delicate openwork wings, outlined by rhinestones, forming the setting
for an extremely realistic central jewel". Two lapel pins in
graduated sizes are sketched here, with similar matching earring at the
bottom. "Created by Ralph de Rosa Inc." This is patent
number 20026934.
Regardless of this ad calling them bees, in person they look more like
colorful flies to me!

the back. Advertised in "Women’s Wear Daily" in 1943, it is in very good vintage condition with
only some cloudy rhinestones. This is really unusual and the interesting
movement in the swirling design shows one reason that I have always
enjoyed collecting DeRosa. Interesting that it was made almost
exactly like the design illustration with almost no changes.

FISH
COPY brooch in gold tone metal with a green rhinestone eye, unsigned,
2-1/3" by 2-1/8". I was surprised when I saw this by how
much it is like the DeRosa fish clip, although it is a bit smaller and the
metal more thin. The DeRosa is two-sided and hollow in the middle,
but this one is curved and all one piece of metal. This is also
textured on the back. I wonder if it was meant to fool the public
into thinking it was by DeRosa, it seems too similar to have been done
by accident. If you know either who made it or when it was made, I
would sure like to know.

~ More
DeROSA HISTORY ~
Raffaele DeRosa married Virginia Naclerio July 10, 1910. She was
barely 16 years old and Ralph was 10 years older. Theresa (their eldest
daughter) was born in 1912 and Elvira in 1914. In 1920, at the age of 35,
Ralph was a foreman at a jewelry factory (don’t know which one yet). When
Ralph died in 1942, his net worth was just shy of $50,000 which was divided
equally between his wife and two daughters. His obituary in the NY Times
stated he was a jewelry designer for 36 years and the President of "Ralph De
Rosa, Inc. for the last 10 years".

Virginia’s 1966 obituary states that the company closed in 1955
(which is contrary to RCJ/CJCI/Brunialti info). It was also confirmed in a
letter written by Clifford Furst of Castlecliff Jewelry to the editor of Women’s Wear Daily
stating the company was already closed in June of 1955, so it was some
months before that.

According to Elvira’s wedding announcement in 1951, she had graduated with a
Bachelor of Science from the College of New Rochelle. She also attended New
York University and Columbia University. Elvira died in 1980 in Florida at
the age of 67.

and very hard to find, it’s the only one I have seen like it so far in the

clear rhinestone and glass pearl brooch in a gold plated setting, not

than most by DeRosa, but similar in the crescent shape with clear
rhinestones in silver colored square settings that rise above the crescent,
giving it nice dimension. The layered flower, buds, leaves and swirl are
also typical DeRosa elements. Having said that, so far I have no proof that
this is a DeRosa brooch like I do for most of my unsigned DeRosa pieces. The
cupped flower on the right side has clear rhinestone stamen spilling out of
the opening in a lovely way. The glass pearl buds are on silver
colored stalks and the rest of this is gold plated. There is light wear in
