DEROSA JEWELRY
1934 to 1955 New York City
Let me begin by saying that I am a big fan of DeRosa jewelry. It’s been one of my top favorites for almost 30 years, so
let me know if you have any for sale. I will always pay really fair
prices for pieces that I like, and I like a lot of their pieces!
Ralph DeRosa Company jewelry is known for its intricate and layered designs,
high quality, unusual stones and lovely translucent enameling. Some of their
jewelry lines were designed by Elvira but I do not know who designed the
rest. Mr. DeRosa’s wife was Virginia and she and their two
daughters, Teresa and Vera (Elvira), also participated in the company.
According to two different
articles in Women’s Wear Daily, one an obituary for Virginia DeRosa, the
DeRosa company was out of business sometime before Spring of 1955. According
to his obituary, Ralph died in August of 1942, and Virginia died in May
of 1966.
DeRosa
jewelry designs include floral, figural, and retro motifs, as well as designs inspired by
some of the precious jewelry of past eras.
DeRosa jewelry is not easy to find because not many of each design were
made, but is certainly more than worth the search. After years of
collecting and selling this wonderful brand, I have found that the
majority of their pieces were signed, so beware unsigned attributions
unless there is very good reference material to substantiate it. This firm was
at 404 Fourth Street in New York City and created jewelry from the
mid-1930s until the mid-1950s.
As a serious collector, one of the best things about this company is the
rarity because not many of their pieces were made. Many of the pieces shown below are the
only ones I have seen in all the years I’ve been handling
vintage jewelry. One exception is the cupid riding on a pearlized cloud
brooch, which I see very often. An example of it is shown in this
feature. For me, that and their brooches using tumbled stones are much less interesting than the other DeRosa
pieces, and my guess is that they were made later.
Hand painted design illustrations from the De Rosa Jewelry Company
seem to have been the first step in the design process. These miniature
works of art are from a collection of over 200 illustrations
that I am happy to own and use as a reference. Several are dated in the
1940’s, and many have hand written notes about how each piece should be
produced. Many jewelry designers never
worked on paper first, but for those who did, these illustrations are
illuminating as to the thought process and
design sense that went into creating this amazing jewelry.

DEROSA
fur clip, a white enamel fantasy flower bud
with absolutely amazing colorful and detailed enamel work, one of DeRosa’s
best three-dimensional pieces! Someone suggested these could be
calla lilies. The throat of this is a soft aqua
color with a red glass bead in the throat and a tiny clear rhinestone in
the center surrounded by gold stamen. Black and green leaves are
painted along the sides, and the base is a translucent green and rose
enamel with colorful rhinestones creating the veins. It is all set

hand engraved number "9-646". This could have been inspired by some of the

DeROSA ACROSTIC JEWELRY
Acrostic jewelry uses the name of gems to spell out a message (Diamond for
"D", Emerald for "E", "R" for Ruby etc.). Popular messages include "regards" and
"dearest", but there were other messages as well. Acrostics were popular in Victorian jewelry as well
as in these pieces from the 1940s.
More DeRosa acrostic pieces can be seen in the book, "Jewels of
Fantasy" by Deanna Cera on page 158. In the book, "Swarovski, a
Celebrating a History of Collaborations in Fashion, Jewelry, Performance &
Design" on page 149, a DeRosa brooch similar to these is featured, so DeRosa
used Swarovski crystals in at least some of their pieces.

DEROSA rare applied charms bracelet with clear rhinestones in a gold
plated sterling silver hinged bangle bracelet. The charms are applied
along the front of the bangle and they are in the shapes of a heart, a
sailboat, a bird, a butterfly, a telephone, a shamrock and what looks like a
leaf at the front center. The finish is in excellent vintage
condition, and the rhinestones are brilliant. It is signed on the back
near the opening "DeRosa sterling". The size is 7" around the inside,
7/8" wide at the front and back both and it has it’s original safety chain.
A tip for putting it on is that the back hinge must be positioned straight
across and flat in order for the bangle to close properly, but that is easy to get the hang of. Like many DeRosa

DEROSA very rare four-piece set in black enamel over a gold and rhodium
plated finish and with brilliant clear rhinestone accents. The design is a
little flower, stem and leaves that lays on top of the black enameled areas,
just lovely! A gold twist frames each piece and also makes up
the band portion of the bracelet. While I rarely use the word "mint"
for any vintage jewelry, this set is in MINT condition in every way, even the
brilliant clear rhinestones. It was probably made in the late 1940s or
1950s. The brooch is made up of three jointed pieces in graduated sizes and
with a hook on the back of the bottom piece, the use of which I don’t know.
It is 4-1/2" long and 1-1/2" at the most wide. The bracelet is a

DEROSA starburst earrings with a glass pearl flower in
the center of each one and smaller glass pearls around that, all in a gold
plated sterling silver setting. Signed on the back, these were made in about
1945 and they are 1-3/16" clip backs. On the inside of the clip part of
the earrings is the patent number 1967965, date 1934, which is for the
findings company Ballou Inc, RI, rather than for DeRosa.

DEROSA set of two dress clips with red and clear rhinestones and
beautiful faceted glass rods, a Deco style. Each is signed "R DeRosa" on the
back and each is 1-3/4" by 1-1/4". I think these were made in the late
1930s and like many DeRosa pieces, they are rare.

DEROSA Deco set of to dress
clips with clear rhinestones and a frosted glass rod through the top of
each. Each clip is 1-3/4" by 1-5/8" and each is signed on the back . These
clips are in very good vintage condition, set in white metal and with some
stones slightly grayed. Another DeRosa piece
using glass in a similar way can be seen in Deanna Cera’s wonderful book
"Jewels of Fantasy" on page 155. As she says in her book, DeRosa is
opulent and elegant, and she credits the piece in her book to designer
Elvira de Rosa circa 1940.

DEROSA vines
motif necklace and bracelet with clear rhinestone and glass half-pearls. The
wrought sterling vine and tendril motif is so special, and this is
the only set like this that I have seen so far, even after years of
collecting DeRosa jewelry. The necklace is 15-1/2" long and 1-1/4" wide at
the front and the bracelet is 7" long and 1" at the widest, with it’s own
safety chain. This is selling as-is because the smallest clear rhinestones
that go behind the neck are graying, and the glass coated pearls are
different shades of cream and white as they have aged over all these years.
This is circa 1940, the bracelet is marked "DeRosa sterling" and the
necklace is marked "sterling".

DEROSA two twinkling clear rhinestone dainty star pins, a set of
two. One is 1-1/3" and one is 1". Only the larger one is signed
"DeRosa" along one side. We called these "Scatter pins" back in the
1950s and wore them 2-3 at a time, high on the shoulder. This set was
made in the 1940s though and they are still in very good condition, a
joy to own and to wear.
