Some of the best and most collectible
Miriam Haskell jewelry was made in the first decades. when Frank Hess
was her head designer. Frank Hess was the head designer from about 1926
to 1960 and his talent is unrivaled. In the early days of Haskell put no identifying marks
on their jewelry at all. As a mater of fact it was not marked until
about 1947. Today the early unsigned pieces can be identified from vintage
art work and advertisements, and by their wonderful detail, hand
work and
design. Read more about HASKELL
EARLY UNSIGNED JEWELRY, see our article in JEWEL
CHAT and the feature on
HASKELL ART WORK & ADVERTISING.

UPDATE: Sadly there is a
lot of Haskell being reproduced and remade to fool the public into
thinking it is the real thing. Be careful and buy from a reputable dealer who knows Haskell well and
stands behind what she sells as the genuine thing!

HASKELL
Hess set of a bracelet, dress clip and the original hand painted Larry
Austin art work that illustrates them. Made with chartreuse, burnt sienna
and tan flattened glass beads and gold tone leaves, the
bracelet and dress clip are just gorgeous, and they are part of the
nasturtium line. The bracelet is adjustable, being strung on elastic thread, and
it is 7" around when relaxed. The dress clip with dangling beads is 3-1/2" long
by 2-1/3" wide. The design art work is 8" by 10" and her dress, hat and furs are
lovely images of that era. All pieces are in excellent vintage condition. Circa
late 1930s, this is an unsigned Frank Hess set designed for Miriam Haskell.

This tidbit is from
Harper’s Bazaar April, 1933,
years ago when America was still reeling from the effects of
the Great Depression.
"It doesn’t do to look dreary, even if your heart is breaking. If you
can’t buy a new dress, or even if you can, go to Miriam Haskell in the
Heckscher Building. The most imaginative and smart costume jewelry
going is being sold there for next to nothing. She dotes on single clips
made like clusters of grapes. These are in all sorts of composition
stones, and there are very nice ones for a dollar. The ensemble is well
worked out, and each clip has a bracelet, some of them for two dollars,
some for more, and some of them have necklaces and woven collarettes as
well. White bead fruit clusters with dull metal leaves are exceedingly
quaint and European looking. We wore a set and were asked by all our
friends where in Paris we found them. Hawaiian coral is rather carrot
colored, very bright and very cheap. For sports wear you will lose your
mind over the deep brown cord bracelet which buttons closed, like a
cuff, over four or five huge yellow bead buttons. There are clips to go
with this. There are braided necklaces for evening and modern versions
of the dog collar and wonderful concoctions which get right away from
the conventional string-of-beads you’re all so sick of. A really
fascinating shop, this, and guaranteed to make a new woman out of you."

HASKELL original advertisement illustrating a Frank Hess clip and
bracelet a woman wearing a brown suit and hat with a clip and bracelet made
of brass leaves with pale aqua beads, Miriam Haskell hand signed, matted in
salmon. The glossy size is 3" by 5" glossy and the matte size 5" by 7",
slight damage to glossy finish on the left side, visible only against the
light so hard to see. This is the
original 1940s ad and matte. Haskell used three types of these ads: the
original gouache art work by Larry Austin, the glossy copies of that art
work, and the parchment copies. This is a glossy.

MIRIAM HASKELL rare and fabulous 1930s necklace, a very ornate and unusual
delight of pearlized flowers, glass pearls and seed pearls mounted on gold tone filigree backings
and held together with chains. Designed by the
then-head designer, Frank Hess, this is a joy to see! It is the only
piece like this that I have seen so far and it’s an amazing example of early
Haskell. The wearable
length is 17-1/2" and it is about 1-5/8" at the widest. The flowers are
pearlized glass and they are in very very good vintage condition,
amazing for it’s age. There is though slight finish loss on some of the
tiny pearls. Larry Vrba, the 1970s head designer at Miriam Haskell,
confirms that this is a lovely old Frank Hess example, designed for
Miriam Haskell. It is certainly
an unusual piece with amazing hand work and interesting elements. What a
genuine treat to own and wear.

created with aqua swirl glass bead clusters set in gold tone caps and chains.

According to Larry Vrba, head designer for Haskell from 1970-78, these
wonderful irregularly shaped glass beads were imported from China and Haskell
used them by the thousands, great favorites of their time.
This original Larry Austin design art work included with this set illustrates an early unsigned
Frank Hess for Miriam Haskell two piece set of necklace and dress clip in lovely
aqua glass beads with gold tone leaves and findings. Note too her stylist dress,
lovely hat and star studded veil, and the fur wrap she carries.
The art work would have been sent to boutiques and shops that sold Miriam
Haskell Jewelry to advertise a new collection. It is numbered on the back

BUTTON CLOSURES
The jewelry below with the button closures is a particular favorite of
mine. Buttons, beads, sea shells, glass flowers and leaves and wooden
pieces are sewn onto a band or two of woven fabric, and then the fabric is
doubled at one end to fashion a button hole. Light weight, easy to fasten and often whimsical, these are pieces
for which I am always on the look-out.
Many of these are attributed to Frank
Hess, Miriam Haskell’s head designer in the early days. But I have also
had them with sewn-in fabric labels saying just "France" and also
with a stapled
attached metal tag with the name "Leo Glass". The ones with
the wooden faces look very Czech, as do others of the wooden Hess
pieces. As you can see in some of
the photos below, there were sometimes matching clips to go with this
style as well. I suspect that some were made in France, imported and
tagged with a maker’s name.

HASKELL Hess cord bracelet with
sea shells, glass flowers in pink, green and yellow with a green glass
button closure all on a woven silk cord in soft faded green, 6-1/2" by
1-1/4". A Frank Hess design for Miriam Haskell, it is unsigned as was
typical of this era circa 1930s. These same flowers are used in the yellow
clip on page 150 of Gordon & Pamfiloff’s "Miriam Haskell Jewelry" and other
Hess pieces. It is interesting to see how many ways Hess used an elements
like the flowers and sea shells in his jewelry. View

HASKELL pink glass petals
bracelet with pink and white glass flowers on woven cord with button closure, 8"
by 1-3/4". There are two shallow hard-to-see chips on two shells, but I couldn’t
get the camera to show them they are so small. Otherwise the bracelet is in
excellent condition. View
