A Victorian lady wearing a locket that probably contained family
photographs and a watch pendant to a bow pin. View

A fancy hat, a lacy collar and a sentimental locket
compliment her costume.

This sentimental locket and collar may have contained a photo and lock of her
sweetheart’s hair. She holds a carte de visite in her hand and also wears a
pair of jet bracelets, one on each wrist, and a brooch.

Is there a more classic piece of jewelry than a locket? Associated with
the remembrance of someone special, it is a gift of love in the form of jewelry.
Lockets are found in almost every jewelry catalogue no matter what the
era. The styles and material from which they are made may change slightly with
the fashions of the era, but their popularity continues from generation to
generation. It is amazing how many different styles in which they were
made.

VICTORIAN 15k and
diamond locket with a blue and white enamel star centered with an oval mine cut cushion diamond.
Around the star are etched roses and leaves designs and inside is a frame
for one photo but no plastic cover. The locket itself 1" by 7/8", total
weight is about .25 ounces. The later-added chain is marked "14k" at the
clasp and is newer than the locket, it is 16" long and about .13 ounces. My favorite appraiser said this is a .10 ct
diamond and the locket tests as 14-15k and looks like bloomed gold, an 1800s
process where cyanide was used on karat gold to bring a better sheen to the
finish. That process, which has several steps, is also called "depletion
gilding". A similar piece can be seen in the book, "Fascination:
British & Continental Jewelry 1785-1885" on page 95.

The best of the
Victorian sterling sets have collars and lockets with photo fittings
inside, wide decorated collars with the "Y piece in place, and hallmarks. With the "Y", they can be
worn at a shorter or longer length, flexibility that many collectors
enjoy. These are all made in about the 1880s, and the motif and styles
were amazingly varied.
Similar pieces can also be seen in the
book, "Warman’s Jewelry" 2nd Edition by Christie Romero on page 65, and
she dates those 1880-1890.

VICTORIAN rare sterling
silver rectangular locket and collar with applied gold fan and an etched

fittings for two photos and is 2-3/4" by 1-1/3". This
period was inspired by simple naturalistic asymmetrical themes such as
birds, leaves and sometimes Japanese-style elements like the birds and fan.

Whitby jet well carved "AEI" pendant with locket back,

can see two small fleabites at the edge of the ring that holds the photo in
place
and the photo itself is later-added and from print media, not a vintage

noticeable except under magnification and mentioned for accuracy only as
they in no way detract from this lovely piece. Jet lockets like this were popular
circa 1870.
