VINTAGE BAKELITE… Contemporary ARTIST!
Ron Shultz makes some of the most charming, colorful and
interesting bakelite jewelry being crafted in the late 20th century, and with by far the best finished
as Ron’s craftsmanship wonderful. Ron started making these
wonderful pieces in the 1980s and continues on a very limited basis
today. They utilize 1930-1940s pieces of bakelite,
which they re-work, carve, laminate and paint to create their pieces. His pieces
are created one at a time by hand. Not only is he talented and creative,
but his jewelry is extremely wearable and
collectible. One of the most fun parts of having a wardrobe of Shultz bangles is the
way they can be mixed and matched to create many different looks and
moods, and to go with almost any style. If you want to have a real

THREE, FOUR & FIVE ROW
CHECKED
BANGLES
Like all of Shultz’s work, the checked bangles
were created one at a time. Some of the color combinations are just
wonderful,
especially considering Shultz himself is partially color blind. Doing multiple
rows is very difficult so there were fewer of the three, four and five
row bangles created.

Because Shultz uses genuine 1930-40s vintage bakelite, the colors will
mellow over time. (I used the word "bakelite" interchangeably with
Catalin.) When he creates a piece, he polishes it in the final
step, removing any oxidization in the process. But over time and with
exposure to air and light, the colors will mellow again. Examples can be
seen below, and the most common is the butterscotch bangle that was
originally white when first made, then turns cream and often
butterscotch over the years. I have seen some real surprises over all
the years that I have handled bakelite. One bangle that looked like a dim
butterscotch color before Shultz polished it went back to a lovely
lavender shade! Genuine vintage bakelite will never be paper white
unless it has been polished, so if you find a white bangle, it is
probably not bakelite or Catalin.

rich cream, as you can see in the progression of photos. Genuine vintage
bakelite will always do the same, turning from white to cream and then
sometimes to butterscotch. Ron Schultz creates his wonderful jewelry
using only vintage circa 1940 bakelite, and every piece is his own
original work. It is signed, as are almost all Shultz pieces, and in

SPECIALS, DOVETAILS & UNUSUAL
Shultz dovetails are made from a certain kind of
vintage bakelite Mah Jong game pieces. They are cut, laminated and
sometimes mixed
with other pieces in order to create the wonderful bangles designs you
see below. "Specials" are one-of-a-kind bangles that are rich with color and motif, and they often but not
always incorporate dovetails in their design. These Mah Jong dovetails are
rare and time consuming, especially in certain colors, so these bangles are very desirable.

2-5/8" by 1-1/4" with 1/2" walls. The aged and beautiful mellowed
colors include butterscotch, red, blue moon, purple, green and lime green.
The four red crosses are accented by four checked ovals, just gorgeous. It’s
signed on the inside and in excellent condition, and I suspect from the
1980s and one of Ron’s earlier bangles.

TWO ROW CHECK BANGLES
An interesting thing to consider about Shultz
bakelite is that, since it is made of vintage 40s era bakelite, some
colors will mellow over time just as the 1940s bangles have done. While
some colors will change very little, others can change quite a bit. One
example is the popular vintage color "butterscotch" which was originally
paper white in color. Oxidization over the years changes the white to
butterscotch. It is not possible to predict exactly what the changes
might be or how long they will take, or if there will be any change at
all in some colors, but that is part of the fun! Here is an example of a Shultz chunky
dot bangle right after Ron made it
