VICTORIAN TURQUOISE JEWELRY
The combination of yellow gold and the gem stone turquoise was a
popular one during the Victorian era. That isn’t to say it wasn’t set in
silver as well, but it does seem to me the yellow gold still
is more special. According to Wikipedia, the word "turquoise" came about when the
earliest of these stones was brought from Turkey into Europe around the
16th century. Turquoise was also was mined in many other countries,
including the US, with
differences in the fineness, matrix and color. More about turquoise can

This is often called "Persian Turquoise", even though this
type of turquoise was mined in other places, including here in my home
state of New Mexico at the Cerrillos Mines. "Persian" turquoise has
a pure blue color with no matrix, as you can see in
the pieces shown below. Turquoise was a popular stone for jewelry
throughout the Victorian era and into the first third of the 20th
Century.

VICTORIAN turquoise, diamond and
15 carat yellow gold foxtail fringed oval pendant circa 1870, total length
without loop is 2-1/3", oval alone 1-1/8" by 1", total weight about .30 ounces.
The pave-set turquoise center oval with a diamond in a star is surrounded by a
beaded edge and then a twist frame. The foxtails are graduated, a nice emphasis

pictures, the turquoise stones have aged to slightly different colors. That is
typical of turquoise, which is a porous stone and absorbs moisture from the air

and a locket similar to this on page 220. As can been seen in the
pictures, the turquoise stones have aged to slightly different colors.
That is typical of turquoise, which is a porous stone and absorbs

VICTORIAN 10-14k Etruscan Revival turquoise gold
diamond pendant and earrings, no marks but these test as 10k for the
pendant and 14k for the earrings. On the back of the pendant is a hair
compartment. The pendant is 1-1/8" and the round portion of each earring
is 3/4" with a length from the top of the loop to the bottom of the
round at 1-1/4". These have the wonderful applied wire work that makes
this style such a favorite, circa 1870. This is a fine jewelry set and
it is in excellent condition. They come in the box as shown in the
photo.

brooch encircled by a snake holding a pear, red and aqua rhinestones, 2".
The setting is textured rolled yellow gold, as though the snake wraps twice
around the center. While the snake was a popular Victorian jewelry motif, a
snake holding a pear is an unusual design. According to
the Wheaton College article
HERE,
"the pear was sometimes seen as the alternate fruit of the fall", but then
it is also seen as a symbol of the Virgin and Christ Child because of it’s
sweetness.

VICTORIAN Austrian Hungarian cherub locket with garnet and turquoise
marquis and cabochons set into gilt silver metal with etched designs.
The wonderful detailed cupid or cherub is colorfully hand painted and
fired onto a porcelain oval. Inside, the locket has plastic covers for
two photos, The locket is 1-1/2" by 1-1/3". There are two tiny hallmarks
on the top loop of the locket but I cannot make out what they
are meant to stand for. I believe one mark is the 1867-1922
mark for sterling silver, and the other mark could be a city mark. My
guess would be that this lovely locket is circa 1890. You can see the

VICTORIAN TURQUOISE JEWELRY
When we got in a wonderful collection of Victorian turquoise and gold rings
I became interested in doing some extra research. According to Wikipedia,
the word "turquoise" came about when the earliest of these lovely blue
stones was brought from Turkey into Europe around the 16th century.
Since then turquoise has been a beautiful and
popular stone to use in jewelry
Having lived here in New Mexico for so long, I was excited when a dealer in
our mall brought an interesting book to my attention. It is Tiffany Blue
by Patricia McGraw. It tells the story of a Victorian era turquoise mine
outside my city of Albuquerque, just north in a very small town called "Cerrillos",
and it speaks of a time between 1892-1933 when the Tiffany Company bought
stones from that mine with which to create wonderful jewelry. Of course not
all turquoise jewelry was from those mines, nor was it all made by Tiffany,
but Tiffany did popularize it during that time.
Author Patricia McGraw’s great grand-father, James Patrick McGraw, was
the manager and supervisor of the AMC, or American Turquoise Company,
between Cerrillos and Santa Fe. There they mined gem quality turquoise,
much of which was shipped back to the Tiffany Company in New York City.
There, Tiffany advertised and popularized the wonderful qualities of the
beautiful sky blue turquoise with no matrix. Not all the turquoise mined
there was of that type, but that type was all in which Tiffany seemed to have had an interest.
Turquoise was also was mined in
many other US areas and other countries but with differences in the
fineness, matrix and color. Cerrillos turquoise looks a lot like Persian turquoise
which has no matrix and is a particularly lovely shade of blue. Turquoise
was a popular jewelry stone throughout the late Victorian era, and is was
sometimes combined with diamonds or seed pearls and used to symbolize remembrance in the form of the
forget-me-not flower.
According to the web site Durango Silver Company,
"Cerrillos turquoise is a very hard stone and so takes a brilliant polish. In
addition to producing a distinctive stone, the Cerrillos mine is the
oldest mine of any kind in North America". What a joy
to share this wonderful collection of antique rings and allow others to add
some to their collections!
