SASH
PINS and BUCKLES
circa 1900

Sash pins were worn most in the
late Victorian and Edwardian time periods, from the 1890’s through the
teens. This photo shows a lady wearing a buckle at her waist in the same
position a sash pin would be worn.

As fashions moved from the
heavier Victorian look, like this lovely lady with her bustle…

… and this lady wearing a
sash pin at her waist…

… to the lighter weight
Edwardian dresses with the "wasp-waist" emphasis like this…

VICTORIAN EPNS (Electro
Plated Nickel Silver) cast belt with ornate cherubs, floral and scrolls design,

VICTORIAN cabinet

VICTORIAN cut steel belt disks and chains, 28-3/4" wearable size and the
widest disk is 1-1/2". It is "as is" with 2 brads missing and a bit of light
rust, but still easily wearable and lovely as well. Each stud has from 10-12
facets. Cut steel is polished steel hand faceted studs riveted to a steel
backing to create jewelry and ornaments, buttons and chatelaines. Popular
from the Georgian through the Victorian eras, cut steel jewelry in the warm
glow of candlelight must have been something to behold. Each stud could have
up to 15 facets, and in general the finer and older the piece, the more
facets the studs will have.

GNS George STEERE Phoenix motif hidden locket brooch with fittings for one
photo. The topaz colored faceted rhinestone showsfrom behind the swirl of the bird’s
wings, circa 1910, 3" by 2-5/8". The locket is under the front motif and opens
on a hinge. Steere made jewelry in Rhode Island from about 1906-1911, and his
pieces have a mythical feel in their motifs. This is the first locket brooch I
have seen from this maker so I assume they are fairly rare.

VICTORIAN dramatic sterling silver sash brooch with citrine-colored
beautifully faceted unfoiled glass center stone. The intricate designs with shell shapes
and scroll details around serve to further highlight it. Looking through that center unfoiled stone,
you can see the design shining through. If you look very carefully, you can
see one tiny silver brad head missing at the bottom of the frame, but
everything in this brooch is set very securely even without it. I have never
seen another piece like this.

silver belt with buckle depicting the faces and wings of five cherubs with
twined buds, branches and scrolls around the edge, a really lovely motif. It
is hallmarked on the top front of the buckle with "R&W" for the maker and
the hallmarks for Birmingham, England, sterling and the date letter for the
year 1917. The belt is 30" wearable size and can be worn smaller by the
width of each link, 1-1/3". The links are 1-1/3" wide, the buckle is 2-1/4"
by 2-1/8". View

ROSE Motif Jewelry

The ROSE, in addition
to being a joy in the garden and a treasure in jewelry, is one of the
most complex symbols in history. Depending on the context, it can stand
for perfection, passion, secrecy, desire or virginity.
In the Victorian language of flowers, the wild rose symbolizes
simplicity, the white rose worthiness and innocence, the red rose
charity and love, the yellow rose friendship and the pink rose grace and
beauty.
In Egyptian times roses were scared to Isis, goddess of love and magic,
and in Greek times to Aurora, goddess of dawn. As a funeral flower, it
symbolizes eternal life.

CAMEOS are such
classic beauties. This one has tiny pink enameled butterflies on the
corners of the filigree frame, a diamond necklace and roses in her hair.

Robert and
Fashioncraft Jewelry

FASHIONCRAFT
New York, NY 1942-1979
Fashioncraft was made from about 1942-1979 by the maker of Robert jewelry.
The name Fashioncraft was used first in the early 1940s and then, according to
Fred Rezazadeh’s book "Costume Jewelry", about 1960
the name "Originals by Robert" began to be used. Judith Miller in her
book "Costume Jewelry" says the same.

ROBERT

There was also a line of Fashioncraft jewelry that looked similar to the Hobe
wire work pieces of the 1940-50s. Some of those pieces can be seen below. The
designs in the wirework are a bit different from those used by Hobe, but they
are similar and unsigned pieces are sometimes confused with Hobe.

This mark was used in the 1940s.

FASHIONCRAFT by Robert heart brooch with purple teardrop-shaped rhinestones
around a black heart-shaped center with a center yellow rhinestone and
circling glass pearls, all set in gold tone, 3" by 2-3/4". A few of the glass
pearls have lost some finish as you can see in the photo, and the clear
rhinestones surrounding the center are graying. The gold tone finish is
in very good vintage condition. It is marked "Fashioncraft Robert" on the
back and it was made in the 1940s.

made of faceted black glass crescents and aqua and pink rhinestones set
in gold tone with chain fringe. The extra large brooch is 5-5/8" by
3-3/4" including the long gold tone fringe, the two crescent pins are
1-3/4" each, and the bracelet is a wearable size of 7" long and 1-3/4"
at the widest. HERE
is another great bracelet from this series, which I once owned. I had it several years ago and it
makes me wonder what other wonderful pieces were made in this series. Every
piece is in excellent condition.

I have owned three of these brooches, each a bit different from the other.
Not only are the rhinestones a bit different in color, but the position of
the legs is different as well. After looking at these and others like them
on line and in books, it is my opinion that they were all made by the same
company.

HORSE gilt sterling hand crafted figural brooch with red, blue, pink, purple,
green and yellow unfoiled rhinestones. Gold tone chains create the mane and tail.
There is soft
finish wear as seen in the picture, with some gold rubbed through to silver on the front, but
it is still absolutely lovely, circa 1946. It is 2-5/8" from head to hoof,
3" from ear to back leg, with 3" long chain fringe. This
example is
unsigned, although probably by Fashioncraft Robert. There is a book piece that is similar
and can be seen in Judith Miller’s "Costume Jewelry" on page 198,
where she attributes it to Robert. In the picture of the advertisement for
this pin shown

here, there are some subtle differences. But this is made exactly
like one I owned marked "Fashioncraft Robert". So I have owned
three similar horse pins, one unsigned, one signed "Fashioncraft Robert’ and
one signed "Original by Robert".

my husband and Marcus Gillihan in 2017, ring size 3-3/4+. It contains 10 round brilliant cut melee
diamonds set into a channel band with a total weight of 1.00 carat.
There is a delicate hand-engraved fancy wheat pattern design on the tops and sides.
It is marked "S 14k" inside, and was made at Shelton’s Jewelers. The
diamonds are 2.9mm to 3.1 mm, color I-K, clarity SI 2 – 11, cut good to
very good. The ring is a size 4. View

set into a brilliant faceted synthetic blue spinel, total weight 4.44 grams (0.15 ozs).
The
diamond is SI clarity I-J color, and the ring is a size 8. The top is 3/4"
by 5/8". The blue spinel really brilliant in color, just as the photo
shows. It is dazzling and in excellent condition. Similar settings can
be seen in the 1927 jewelry catalogue

design reminds me of the Chinese yin and yang which symbolizes the
complimentary forces of opposites and duality, such as fire and water, light

ounces. Formed into sides
of the ring are wild roses and leaves, as well as stylized flowers. It is in
very good vintage condition with only light wear on the top of the amethyst.

sapphires. The diamond is .026 carat, I-K color. The small sapphires are chipped,
which can be seen only under a loupe, so this is priced accordingly. It
is a
size 6-1/2 and the total weight is .04 oz. The filigree is lovely and the
ring is in very good vintage condition other than the sapphires.

wide at the front. Each side has an engraved flower and leaf on the shoulder. There are
microscopic flea bites on some of the blue sapphire edges, invisible to the naked eye and
hard to see even with my 5x camera lens, but mentioned for accuracy.

not only the six stones that stand for that word (ruby, emerald,

the ring. What a wonderful lover’s ring! It is hallmarked inside the band
for the maker "P&RR" the number "375" for 9 carat gold, and the date marks for 1984. It is a size 6-3/4 (or size M in the UK) and it is 1/4" wide at the front
and 1/8" wide at the back. The setting is in excellent condition, and the
stones are in good vintage condition with abrasions and flea bites on a few
stones from wear, visible under magnification.

the partial maker’s mark inside "GOTH__" and "14K" , size 6-3/4 and
5/8" along the finger. The ring has mixed period cuts for the diamonds,
possibly a 1950s remake using diamonds from older jewelry. It is 5.09
grams total weight (0.17 ozs). There are 4 diamonds and three emeralds.
One diamond is a 4.67-4.71 x 2.87mm I V2 round, 1930-40s. Another is a
3.6 to 3.7 x 2.21 cushion cut 0.19 ct H SI2 with a tiny pavilion chip.
And there is a 3.5 Old European cut K/VS 0.16 carat, and the last is a
3.6mm Old European cut F/VS 0.17 ct. The total estimated diamond weight
is .90 cts. All three emeralds are chipped, seen only under
magnification.

finger, it is a smaller size than normal. It has a surrounding crescent of .0.33 carat single cut total weight
diamonds that encircles the garnet beautifully. The side diamonds are 12
single cut 1/3 ct total weight and 1 full cut. sc is VS clarity, HI color, and
the full cut is I-I clarity. Two of the diamonds are chipped, hard to see except
under magnification, and those two are G-H color. Marked 14k and "RC" with an
acorn, it is 10.30 grams total
weight. A beautiful sparkler for sure!

18 karat yellow gold dolphin ring with blue and green enameling,
hallmarked K18 750 A .75, size 6-3/4, weight about .25 ounces, and missing a
bit of enameling along the outer edges, visible under magnification. The
owner said this ring came back from an older relative’s trip to Greece. I
have heard that dolphins inhabit all the oceans of the earth, so they figure
in much of the world’s mythology. They were the messengers of the Greek god
Poseidon, who is often seen surrounded by dolphins. He is god of the
sea and of earthquakes, and dolphins were considered good luck and
associated with romance. A lovely ring with a mythological background, as
well as the figure of a wonderful animal.

double serpent ring
with rose cut diamond center in a closed back setting, circa 1810-1830, size 9-1/2,
weight 4.664 grams. The diamond is set in a pinched silver collet rim and the scale
design wraps around the entire ring. The diamond is 3.3 to 3.6 mm,
difficult to measure in this setting. The color is a foil backed light
brown and it has a tiny broken edge visible only under magnification. View

GEORGIAN antique 15k Stuart crystal
ring with gold wire cipher on the inside, size 9-1/2, stone itself 1/2"
by 1/2". The crystal is a faceted octagon with a tiny layer of brown under
the crystal and a dash of rose pink coloring. I think the
little cipher says "JC". The band tests 15k and the setting is
silver, so it may have been reset at some point in the past. This is late 1700s to early 1800s and really
lovely, a treasure for the collector of antique rings and a delight to wear
with care.

VICTORIAN high domed rock crystal cabochon ring with reverse carved and
painted robin bird on a branch with oak leaves. The setting also has has
three leaves in gold on each side of the center cabochon. The ring is just a
tad under a size 9 and runs 3/4" along the finger, the cabochon is a very
deep 1/3" with some scratching visible under magnification, some paint
missing inside as can be seen in the photos. The band, which may be
later-added, is hallmarked for 9ct gold, "375", maker "T&S", "9 375 R"
in a hexagon mark. The cabochon tests as rock crystal, the band
tests 10k, and the setting around the cabochon setting tests 14k. NOTE: That is my windows reflected in the

VICTORIAN 10-14k Tassie cameo portrait
of "Mad" King George II, (1738-1820), size 5 and 3/4" by 5/8" along the finger.
This material for making cameos was invented by James Tassie late 18th
century. The blue coloring at 3 o’clock on the ring is probably a manufacturing
error at the time it was made since the blue color is also under the top layer of
the white cameo, seen from the side. The total weight is about .26 ounces. Hallmarks on the band are crown 375 tiger face and cursive "D"
maker’s mark "B G", band tests 10k, front tests 14k, so I am thinking it is
possible that he band may not be original to the ring. There are no other signs
that it was ever anything else, though. View

GEORGIAN antique memorial or mourning hair ring, an antique 1802-dated 9
karat yellow gold, seed pearl and hair mourning ring inscribed inside "En
Thornton obt 8 Nov 1802 at 54". The size is 8-3/4 and it is 1/2" along the
finger at the front. The total weight is about .13 ounces. There are 20 pearls
around the center compartment, all beautifully matched and prong set. There is
a tiny faint spot of scratches on the crystal, visible only under very close
examination, but the braided hair can still be seen through it, and the setting
is in very good condition. This is a real treasure from another age.

18 carat yellow gold 1820-1840 ring with mine cut diamond, four natural
pearls and black and white enamel, size 7-3/4. You can just barely see
where it was once engraved as a memorial inside the band, but over the
years it has almost all rubbed away. The raised design goes all around
the band in a chain-like design meeting at the front with scrolls
that hold the central rectangular element. There is loss of some of the black
enameling visible only under magnification and wear on some of the
pearls. The diamond is approximately 0.15 carat, SI-2 clarity and I-J

The ring is a 12 karat yellow gold
size 7-1/4, has been sized in the past. The diamond is a cushion
shaped mine cut approximately 4.0 x 3.5 x 2.5 mm. and about 0.25 carats,
color I, clarity I-1 with a shallow chip under one prong visible under
magnification.
The brooch is 12k yellow gold,
cushion shaped mine cut diamond and black onyx (dyed black chalcedony) bar pin engraved "A.K.Mc
to E.G. 1876". The diamond is approximately 3.2-3.8 x 2.55 mm, about
0.20 carats. This ring and brooch were given to Eliza Gray McClure in 1876 by her husband
Alexander Kelly McClure

(b.1828, d.1910). The jewelry is engraved on both pieces.
Alexander McClure was a

politician and writer, and was a biographer and supporter of Abraham Lincoln in the
1860 Presidential election, just before the Civil War. He owned a newspaper and was a prolific
political writer. According to the
1860 census he lived in Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

are given for this custom. One goes back to Roman times, when a ring was

a nerve ran from there to the heart. In Christian custom, the third
finger symbolizes the Trinity.

It is always fun when a ring is inscribed with a
date, taking the guess work out of circa dating. Although jewelry is
sometimes seen with a much later inscription, that is not the norm.
Rings from the early 1800s that are not dated may also have features to help identify them. Stones
in that period were often set in a close-backed mounting, and sometimes
foiled as well. Stones in the rings could also be set in a silver head
with a karat gold band and rose cut diamonds, all typical of this time
period. Hair and memorial rings were worn by both men and women.

~ 1860 to
1890 ~
Jewelry catalogues came into vogue along with the
mass production of jewelry. Looking at the illustrations and written
descriptions is a definitive way to date pieces. Hair jewelry was still
popular and could be fashioned as a home craft or ordered from
catalogues. Taille
d’epargne enamel work became very popular, as did mosaic and Mizpah rings.
Jewelry of this era can be a bit heavier and more somber that later
jewelry.

GARNET 9ct garnet cabochon and rose cut diamonds ring in a split shank
style. It tests as 9-10 carat yellow and white gold ring, size 8-1/4 and
7/16" by 1/3" across the top, weight .14 ounces. My jeweler polished the
gold setting on this ring so that it looks new, but it isn’t. An
interesting note is that the gem
stone "garnet" was named after the fruit "pomegranate" for the color and
luminescence of the seeds.

Persian
turquoise is a turquoise with no matrix at all and it was originally
mined in Persia and later brought to Europe. Mines in the US state of New Mexico were also
found to have a similar type of turquoise, like the Cerrillos mines just
south of Santa Fe. The story is that this turquoise was used by
the Tiffany company in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and it may have
even been the source of the lovely aqua color in their advertising.
Turquoise like this was very popular in the Victorian era and even into
the early 20th Century. Often set in karat yellow or rose gold, the

BRASS
and gold tone metal sample signet rings circa 1900, group of 6. Some are
marked "sample" on the inside. One ring is a size 6-1/2 and one 9-1/4, others
from 6-3/4 to 7-3/4. You can see some in a vintage Low’s Catalogue
HERE.
Some of these salesmen’s sample signet rings are marked W&W for Warren &
Williams, 36 Garnet St., Providence, Rhode Island. In Dorothy Rainwater’s
book on jewelry marks, page 249, it says they were ring manufacturers circa
1904-1912, but they are also on page 89 of "Trademarks" published by the
Jewelers Circular Publishing Company in 1915.

tortoise, vulcanite, wood or something different entirely. My guess is

The jewelry we call just "Regency" was made by the
Regency Novelty Company in New York City from
about
1950-1970. It is also seen marked "Regency Jewels" with a
copyright mark. Using brilliant rhinestones, glass petals and drops, it is found set in gold and silver
tone metal as well as a matte gun metal color. I have always felt this
wonderful maker is under-rated as far as price is concerned.
Many of their pieces remind me of Schreiner and although they don’t
use the variety of colors in one piece that Schreiner does,
the quality of the brilliant rhinestones is every bit as nice.

REGENCY brooch and earrings with the brown blue saphiret teardrop
shaped cabochons, teardrop shaped blue and tan rhinestones and a round
blue center on the brooch, all in a gold tome metal setting. The brooch,
which is signed "Regency" on the back, is almost 2" across and the clip
back earrings are 1-1/8".

Saphiret glass was made first in Gablonz, Czechoslovakia in the mid-19th
century by mixing melted gold into sapphire-colored glass. The result is
that wonderful milk-chocolate with blue tints that you see here,
changing with the light.

RED large rhinestones cascades necklace in lush red rhinestones set in
silver tone with matching clip back dangling earrings. The necklace can be
worn from 18" to 19-1/2" long and the front drop is 4-1/2", so this is a
large necklace. The clip back earrings are 3" long and 3/4" wide and they
have pads for comfortable wear. Each red rhinestones is about 7/16" wide.
This is in excellent condition and if you are a red lover, nothing could be better!

1900-30s

Lovely lady with a leather
Arts & Crafts purse attached at her waist chatelaine style, circa 1910.

The Arts & Crafts purses may have been inspired by William Morris’ designs and
Elbert Hubbard’s Roycrofter molded leather book bindings and purses. There were many makers of these Arts & Crafts purses,
as well as the fittings and the frames. Some of my favorites are Meeker (Joplin, MO), Enger Kress, Amity,
Justin, Bosca (Springfield, Ohio) and Kranz of Cordova Shops (Buffalo,
NY). Metal fittings for these purses were made by Jemco and Turnloc and
others.
They were most popular from the turn of the century to the 1930s and
they are
made of genuine leather.

This 2-1/3" by 3-1/3"

photograph of a stylish couple was taken in about 1920, and if you
look closely, you will see that she carries a leather Arts & Crafts
handbag.

PURSE Arts & Crafts leather purse with Jemco frame,
elegant and simple stripe design on bag and flower and leaf design on pull
