HATTIE CARNEGIE was the creator of a fashion empire designing not
only clothing and accessories but jewelry as well. Carnegie costume jewelry was made from the 1940’s to
the 1970’s. She often used
specific themes in her jewelry lines, an example being her Oriental
group, her beaded flowers and her poured glass pieces. Some of
her major designers were Norman Norell, Pauline Trigere,
Peggy Moonan, Nandine Effront. Elegant and innovative, her jewelry
remains both wearable and collectible today. Jewelry under this name was
produced for several more years after her death in 1956 and "Hattie Carnegie" jewelry was made from about 1939-1979.
Her earlier jewelry was marked with the "HC" mark, and it’s some of my
favorite of her work. It tends to be heavier and larger than her later pieces, and
her fur clips are well balanced and easy to wear. She used wonderful
elements like glass cabochons, pressed glass leaves and overlapping
elements.

This METROPOLITAN MUSEUM seal
from the 17th or 18th century looks very much like the Hattie Carnegie
clips seen at the right, so I am guessing they were made using it as an
inspiration. The seal is 3" by 1-3/8" and was donated by J.
Pierpont Morgan in 1917. It is made of gold, platinum, diamonds and
emeralds. What a wonderful thing! Carnegie surely must have been inspired by this
piece. Courtesy of the
Metropolitan Museum and here is the
Source.

HC Hattie Carnegie royal king and queen fur clips with pearlized
bellies and clear rhinestone accents in a lovely matte gold tone setting,
from 1942. Both have the earlier "HC" mark for Hattie Carnegie on the back.
The king is 2-1/4" by 1-1/4", the queen 2-5/8" by 1-1/2". There is a
piece of cream colored felt glued to the back of the queen, as you can see
in the photo, but not on the king. These are such a great couple and can be
worn together or one at a time. In very good vintage condition, the only
flaw is a bit of very light scuffing on a pearl belly, hard to notice unless
you are looking very closely. There is a similar piece, a seal, in fine
jewelry section of the Met Museum and on their web site
HERE. Theirs is from the 17th-18th century and made of carat gold,
platinum and
diamonds. Ours of course is a piece of costume jewelry, but I bet the Met’s
seal was Carnegie’s inspiration for her set. NOTE: I have seen an
advertisement now dating these to 1942 and calling them the "Emperor"
pin and "Empress Elizabeth". Thanks to Liz
Gross.

UNSIGNED NOTE: This
unsigned mermaid brooch is often attributed to Hattie Carnegie, but so
far, we have never seen a single Carnegie signed version of it. This brooch WAS
seen by us back in the late 1990s, along with some other fakes and
knock-offs. It was being offered for sale at a Las Vegas Jewelry show by the
CT company who made jewelry reproductions,
including a few unsigned "Swarovski" brooches, like their crown. There may be a signed version of this mermaid, and if so, we
would like to see it. So far, I see no evidence that it is by Carnegie
at all. Several styles of other Carnegie brooches with similar
plastic elements to this have
now been reproduced.
|
Here is a part of a page from a CT Catalog from the 1990s. Shown here is
the
MERMAID brooch seen in person here at the left. The same
catalog has other knock-offs of pieces by Carnegie, Swarovski and others but we
recall thinking they were not nearly as good quality as the real thing.
Some remind me of Ciner designs, but many of those are not exactly
alike. None of the ones we saw were signed.
|
CT & Company also used the names Carucci, Nina and Hui Designs. The
address on these catalogs are at the California Mart, and we were told
the pieces were made in Asia, China I think.
Shown above is their knock-off of the famous Swarovski crown brooch from
the 1990s.
