MIRIAM HASKELL JEWELRY & Design Art Work |
We have added some amazing Miriam Haskell jewelry from my personal collection to the web site for sale! Come take a look, it's gorgeous and it took us years for me to assemble all of it. Some even came from the Haskell archives when we were there in the last 1990s.
One of the many things that makes Miriam Haskell jewelry so special is the intricacy of their designs and and the hand work necessary to make them, especially in the earlier era when Frank Hess was the head designer. Inspiring many of those pieces were the unusual poured glass leaves, beads and findings sourced from all over the world.
Enjoying jewelry history as I do, it was a joy to find the original advertising art work, sent to the shops and boutiques that carried Haskell jewelry. Collecting both the art works and the pieces they illustrate is a real treat, and in my case it took years to do. I was surprised to discover that Larry Austin's 1930-1940s illustrations were very true to the original pieces. I am still on the hunt for more unusual Haskell designs and am thrilled each time I find a new one.
Please BEWARE when you are thinking of buying Haskell! There are many fakes and put-togethers for sale on the internet now, so buy from a reputable dealer who knows about Haskell and can document what she is selling.

HOBE and Hobe style BRACELETS, 1940s-1950s
|
Hobe et Cie was founded in Paris in 1887 by Jacques Hobe. His concept was to use fine jewelry techniques to create jewelry for the middle class as well as for the wealthy. Brought to America in 1915 by his son William, the Hobe Jewelry Company was popular not only with everyday customers, but also with the Hollywood stars and such luminaries as Flo Ziegfield. Inspired by periods jewelry from the past, Hobe jewelry often had an historic flavor.
The name HOBE is synonymous with quality, especially in their earlier pieces. Although they made buckles and accessories in the late 1800s, their costume jewelry pieces from the 1930-50's years are my personal favorites. Their silver gilt wire-worked designs and hand wrought sterling silver pieces set with fabulous and sometimes semi-precious stones, create a unique old-world style. The purse frames, done in conjunction with Josef, makers of fine purses, are wearable works of art. The hand fashioned wire work is masterful, adding to the appeal of this jewelry.
It is also interesting to know that others made jewelry with the Hobe look. The aqua rhinestone bracelet here is an Original by Robert, and we have even seen a very few DeRosa bracelets made in this same Hobe style. We had a DeRosa bracelet like that a long time ago, shown here in the last photo. It looks even more like the Hobe bracelets than the Robert bracelets do, and I wish I knew how that came about. Did DeRosa make them or did they contract with Hobe to make them and put the DeRosa name plate on them?
