FEATURE: HOBE JEWELRY

HOBE JEWELRY 1934-1970s

The name HOBE is synonymous with quality, especially in their earlier pieces. Although they made buckles and accessories in the late 1800s, then moved into costume jewelry. Their costume jewelry from the 1930s to 1950s are my personal favorites. Their wire-worked designs and fabulous stones create a unique old-world style. When they combine objects into their jewelry, they take creativity to a new high. The purse frames, done in conjunction with Josef, makers of fine purses, are true works of art.

Hobe et Cie was founded in Paris in 1887 by Jacques Hobe. His concept was to use fine jewelry techniques and non-precious materials to create jewelry for the middle class as well as for the wealthy. Brought to America in 1915 by his son William, Hobe jewelry was popular not only with everyday customers, but also with the Hollywood stars and such luminaries as Flo Ziegfield. Inspired by period jewelry of the past, earlier Hobe jewelry also had an historic flavor.

Unlike other famous makers, good older Hobe jewelry is getting more and more difficult to find. These wonderful pieces have pride of place in my personal collection, and I love to share my delight in them with other dealers and collectors as well.

FEATURE: JEWELRY Design Art Work

Like any other artist, each jewelry designer is inspired in a different way. For some it might be a color of Czech beads or a line of rose montees, for others, a flower from nature. Often a line was requested by the marketing department, who took into account the styles and colors of each season, the beads, rhinestones and findings available, and the cost of manipulating these into a 3-4 lines each year.

How the designer takes his inspiration from idea to materials to finished product is a journey to consider when we enjoy the jewelry we wear and collect.

In the art work of jewelry designers we are lucky to have these smaller treasures to reference the history of jewelry. Most of these design paintings are gouache and/or ink on parchment or illustration board, and most are 8" by 10" or smaller. They demonstrate the development from an original idea to the finished product and lend insight into the creative process. Because some jewelry designers hand-manipulate their materials to form an original work from which other pieces could be duplicated, art work for some pieces never existed. But some first develop their ideas on paper, thereby using material that was meant to be temporary, like paper, so it is amazing that any of these ephemeral pieces have survived.

The art work shown here is all from the Barclay company, and there's more on our Jewel Chat reference page.
