DEROSA JEWELRY

DEROSA JEWELRY 1934-1970s
Let me begin by confessing that I am just wild about DeRosa jewelry! It's been one of my top favorites for years, so let me know if you have any for sale. I will always pay really fair prices for pieces that I like.

Ralph DeRosa jewelry is known for its three-dimensional layered designs, high quality components, and translucent enameling. DeRosa jewelry designs include floral, figural, retro motifs, and designs inspired by the precious jewelry of the era. DeRosa jewelry is not easy to find because they didn't make many of each style, but is certainly more than worth the search. After years of collecting and selling this wonderful brand, I have found that the majority of their pieces were signed, so beware unsigned attributions where there is no reference material to substantiate it. This New York City firm was at 404 Fourth Street in New York City and did jewelry from the mid-1930's until the 1970's. Like many jewelry makers, their 1940-50's jewelry is their best, in my opinion. DeRosa is one of my very favorite makers and I collect it myself.

As a serious collector, one of the best things about this maker is that not many pieces seem to have been made. Many of the pieces shown below are the only ones I have seen in all the years I've been handling vintage jewelry, and that's a long time. One exception is the cupid riding on a pearlized cloud pin, which I see very often. An example is shown here on this page. To me, it much less interesting than most other DeRosa pieces.

Hand painted illustrations from the De Rosa Jewelry Company seem to have been the first step in the design process. These miniature works of art are from a collection of over 300 similar illustrations that I am happy to own and use as a reference. Several are dated in the 1940's, and many have hand written notes about how each piece should be produced. They seem to have been done by several different artists, as the painting styles and designs vary. Many jewelry designers never worked on paper first, but for those who did, these illustrations are illuminating as to the thought processes and design sense that went into creating this amazing jewelry.

HOBE JEWELRY

1927 to 1992 in America
Hobe et Cie was founded in Paris in 1887 by Jacques Hobe. His concept was to use fine jewelry techniques and non-precious materials to create jewelry for the middle class as well as for the wealthy. Brought to America in 1915 by his son William, Hobe jewelry was popular not only with everyday customers, but also with the Hollywood stars and such luminaries as Flo Ziegfield. Inspired by period jewelry of the past, Hobe jewelry often had an historic flavor.

The name HOBE is synonymous with quality, especially in their earlier pieces. Although they made buckles and accessories in the late 1800s, their costume jewelry pieces from the 1930-50's years are my personal favorites. Their gilt wire-worked designs and fabulous stones, sometimes semi-precious stones, create a unique old-world style. The purse frames, done in conjunction with Josef, makers of fine purses, are works of art.
