| FEATURE: EISENBERG JEWELRY | Two important things have happened if you are an Eisenberg Jewelry fan. One is that our dear friend Bobye Syverson, unofficial "Queen of Eisenberg Jewelry", passed away late last year. Bobye and I had a wonderful time working on jewelry projects together over the years, like her interview "Eisenberg Jewelry" HERE, and our multi-page spotlight showing "Movie Star Spangles". She was a brilliant woman and a sharing one as well. I would like to honor her and her work this month. The second news is that the long-awaited book "Eisenberg Jewelry, 1920s to 1950s" will be published any time now. Authors Sharon Schwartz and Laura Sutton have worked on this new book for quite awhile, so I am looking forward to seeing it soon. I think we have needed a book on this interesting maker for a long time, so I am really excited. In honor of both events, I would like to once more bring Eisenberg Jewelry to your mind. The company fashioned some amazing pieces, most designed by Ruth Kamke. One of Bobyes favorites was the "Piggy Goes to Market" brooch, a rare one. Another were the kings and queens, but like so many of the Eisenberg pieces, these have been reproduced, so use caution and buy from a reputable and knowledgeable source. My favorites are the unusual pieces, often clips, in unusual colors, made in the 1940s. Like many jewelry makers, the Eisenberg Company didnt use only rhinestones, but also glass beads and some bakelite as well. And to see our gallery of Eisenberg Jewelry, click HERE. And if you would enjoy adding Eisenberg to your wardrobe, see what we have for sale HERE, with more to come in the next month. To see whats new on Morning Glory, please click HERE.
| FEATURE: Your Own Jewelry Collection | The new year always tempts me to clean out, organize and rearrange, including my own personal jewelry collection. This year, I thought you might enjoy doing that with yours as well! It is such a fun way to begin the annual Spring Cleaning season... no dirty mops or kneeling allowed! Step #1 is to get every piece out on a big table where I can see it all at once. I select one group of things I have worn often in the past year so want to keep, and one group of jewelry I almost never wore and may not want to keep. A third pile is made up of pieces that, while I may rarely wear them, are really special to me and which I want to keep, regardless.
And that leaves a pile of other jewelry that I deal with next, in Step #2. Thats the "should-I-keep-them" pile! Step #2 is to review the group of pieces that I have NOT been wearing. I look to see if I want to keep them, and either find specific things with which to wear them, or gift them to someone else who will enjoy them. Step #3 is to determine how I want to store and/or display what I will be keeping. For the things I wear often, I like the idea of being able to see them easily, so I have a cabinet with glass doors that we converted into a jewelry display space. It is lighted, clean and dust free, being behind glass. Inside are 2" wide and 36" long ribbons where I can pin brooches and clips, hooks for necklaces, and upright tubes for hard-sided bangles, like bakelite. For the very delicate antique or fine jewelry pieces, either a bank safety deposit box or a home safe is recommended. We choose NOT to keep high value pieces at home. I store these pieces in one layer in the padded velvet trays with silver cloth on top, where needed, or a soft cloth. Then stacking the trays is safe, as long as they are deep enough for the jewelry they contain. Once all of that is done, it is always good to review each piece for missing stones, damage or moisture. The more quickly these issues are dealt with, the better of course. And now the jewelry is all ready for another sparkling year of wearing! To see whats new on Morning Glory, please click HERE.
