FEATURE: DEROSA JEWELRY

DEROSA JEWELRY 1934-1970s
Ralph DeRosa jewelry is known for its complex dimensional design, high quality components and translucent enamel work. DeRosa jewelry designs include floral, figural and retro motifs, and designs inspired by the precious jewelry of the era. DeRosa pieces are not always easy to find, but they are certainly worth the search. This New York City firm was at 404 Fourth Street in New York City and they made jewelry from the mid-1930s until the 1970s. Like many jewelry makers, their 1940s jewelry was the best.

One thing that enchants me about this jewelry is the layered three-dimensional design. It's genius shows in so many of their better pieces, such as the purple clip shown here, where each layer stands out from the other. Another is that they didn't made nearly as many of each piece as some of the other companies did, like Coro for instance. They were special, and still are. Actually, the only piece that I have seen several of is a later brooch, which in the shape of a cherub riding pearlized glass waves.

Hand painted illustrations from the De Rosa Jewelry Company were the first step in their design process. These miniature art works are from a collection of over 300 similar illustrations that I own. Several are dated in the 1940s, and many have hand written notes about how each piece would be produced. They seem to have been done by several different artists, as the painting styles vary. Many other jewelry designers did not work on paper first, but for those who did, these illustrations are illuminating as to the thought processes and design sense that went into creating this wonderful jewelry.

FEATURE: DEROSA Design Art Work

Years ago I was thrilled to be able to buy a collection of design art work for the DeRosa Jewelry Company, and what a treasure it is! With that began my love for this amazing maker. Over the years since then, we have found a number of jewelry pieces that were among those illustrations.

Not all jewelry makers start from a design on paper. Larry Vrba, for instance, begins with hand manipulated metal settings, another method of designing. And others had their jewelry made by using cast molds.

DeRosa seems to have used the design work on paper, at least in the early years. From the notes on some of the art work, each piece was then approved or changed before the jewelry were made. There are about 300 designs in my collection, and we have been able to find the marching jewelry to many of these pieces. DeRosa usually signed their work, but for a few of their unsigned pieces, we were able to identify them ONLY from the art work. The blue winged bird shown here is an example of that.
