MIRIAM HASKELL JEWELRY & ART WORK

In the early days of Miriam Haskell jewelry from about 1926 to the 1940s, Haskell put no identifying marks on their pieces. As a mater of fact it was not marked at all until about 1947. Today the early unsigned Frank Hess pieces are recognized from their vintage art work and advertisements of that era, and by their wonderful detail, hand work and design. Frank Hess was Miriam Haskell's head designer for decades, and his pieces are especially valued. They were perfectly formed, using interesting beads and lovely colors. An artist named LARRY AUSTIN illustrated many of these designs in his ADVERTISING ART WORK, which was sent to the shops and boutiques that sold Haskell.

Collecting both the art work and the pieces it illustrates is a real treat, and in my case, it took years to do. I was surprised as I went along to discover that Mr. Austin's illustrations were very true to the original pieces. I am still on the hunt for more unusual Hess designs and am thrilled each time I find a new one.

Frank Hess went on to other jewelry ventures in about 1960, but the legacy of unique talent he left behind delights collectors and jewelry wearers to this day. When Frank Hess was Miriam Haskell's head designer, he made some of the most amazing pieces of jewelry. Some of my favorites are the ones that include glass petals in beautiful colors. These were some of the materials used during the 1940s WWII years and for a bit after. Combined with the intricate glass bead work, they make for a wonderful look unique to Haskell at the time.

HOBE JEWELRY 1940s-1950s

Hobe et Cie was founded in Paris in 1887 by Jacques Hobe. His concept was to use fine jewelry techniques and non-precious materials to create jewelry for the middle class as well as for the wealthy. Brought to America in 1915 by his son William, Hobe jewelry was popular not only with everyday customers, but also with the Hollywood stars and such luminaries as Flo Ziegfield. Inspired by period jewelry of the past, Hobe jewelry often had an historic flavor.

The name HOBE is synonymous with quality, especially in their earlier pieces. Although they made buckles and accessories in the late 1800s, their costume jewelry pieces from the 1930-50's years are my personal favorites. Their gilt wire-worked designs and fabulous stones, sometimes semi-precious stones, create a unique old-world style. When they combine figural objects into their jewelry, such as in the elephant brooch below, they take creativity to a new high. The purse frames, done in conjunction with Josef, makers of fine purses, are works of art.

HOBE and their wonderful hand wrought gilt wire work jewelry from circa 1940s-1950s are some of my very favorites. Some of the Hobe jewelry from this era is set with semi-precious stones and some with brilliant rhinestones, both often unfoiled. The hand fashioned wire work is masterful, adding to the appeal of this jewelry. In my experience, the most common color combinations seem to be the red, clear and blue and the aqua and clear.
