VICTORIAN antique pre-Civil War dated 1843 14 karat yellow gold and hair brooch

Price: $598.00
Description VICTORIAN antique early pre Civil War 1840s hair brooch in 14 karat yellow gold with black enamel and three strands of plaited thick blonde hair under glass, 2" by 1-1/2".  It has the tube and c-catch closure with an extended pin stem typical of this era.

The mourning message "In Memory Of" in old English lettering encircles the frame, and engraved on back is this: "Ms Buchannan, died 12th Nov 1843 John Wilson died 4th June 1843" On the back is a tiny loop where a safety chain could be attached, and there are a few very small dimples there, but nothing that detracts, I couldn't even get my camera to capture them.

The black portions you see on the back of the brooch are only the reflection of my camera lens against the curved back of the brooch.  This is in amazingly great condition for an almost 200-year-old brooch! This brooch was seen in Christie Romero's "Warman's Jewelry, 3rd Ed", page 35 and similar pieces can be seen in in Becker's "Antique & Twentieth Century Jewelry" on page 106.  This brooch was also was featured in Southeastern Antiquing & Collecting Magazine, August 2003.

It has been in my personal collection for many years, and I have enjoyed owning it and wearing it now and again.  Pieces out of history like this are very special.  View   View   View   View
